Legionary of Mary

The Legion of Mary is a Lay Apostolic Association of Catholics with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of All Graces; it was founded by Frank Duff in Dublin Ireland on 7th Sept 1921. The Legion of Mary Apostolate was introduced in Uganda by a lady from Ireland, Edel Quin at Nsambya Parish on July 22, 1938. The Legion aims to bring Mary to the world as the infallible means of winning the world to Jesus. All practicing Catholics, men and women, married or single, who wish to play their full part as lay members can become members. The Legion of Mary has two kinds of membership: active and auxiliary. Active members of the Legion of Mary are required to undertake some apostolic work every week set at the meeting. Auxiliary or praying members are the praying wing of the Legion of Mary army, and by their prayers support active legionaries in much the same way that an air force would support an army. Here in Namugongo there are 13 praesidia, there both Luganda and English presidia our spiritual director is Fr. Mathias Zighihika, a Missionary of Africa from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
